craigslist

February 12, 2009 by Aaron Friedman 1 Comment

As I begin my move to Chicago, I figure, time to start selling some stuff. Furniture or whatever it may be. But I know that some of it must go as it just wont fit into the 16 ft truck I am renting to make the trip.

While yes, I got many responses, one of them struck me as a little odd. This IKEA coffee table that we are selling for some reason was a hot commodity, especially for one Craig’s List user who after a short dialogue, sent me the following email:

Hello,
Thanks for the prompt response and i will like you to withdraw the advert from Craigslist,i don’t mind adding an extra $20dolls for you to take the advert down from craigslist so that i can be rest assured that am in hand of the item.I don’t have time to come take a look. I will be paying via cashier’s check, and it will be over night payment .You don’t need to bother your self with the shipment Ok,i will take care of that.So i will need you to provide me with the following information to facilitate the mailing of the check.
1.Your full name
2.Your mailing address be it residential or postal address
3.Your phone number.
i will have my mover come over as soon as you have the check
Have a great day
I look forward to hearing from you!
Thank you again

He upped my own ante! And not only that, he doesn’t even want to see the thing before he gets it, he is going to send his mover to come get it, and pay me for it up front.

I am not exactly sure what to make of it. I think if there is anything to be learned from our dear friend Bernie Madoff, (who incidentally as the former chairman of the board at Yeshiva University holds a signature on my diploma, but that’s neither here nor there), if it looks too good to be true, it probably is too good to be true.

So yes I am skeptical about the whole thing with this guy, and while part of me says, go ahead with it, in the end of the day, my brother and sister in-law actually decided they want it…

Too bad. I would have liked to see where this could have led!
