WordPress tablet edition

Not too long ago I decided to put myself in the tablet market. I am not entirely sure why it happened. I think it was because I started looking forward to a computer replacement. But either way, I wanted a tablet. Really I wanted a ’10er but I am not a big apple guy, so I decided to go Nexus. This was when the nexus 7 was basically said to be the best ‘7er on the market. So I got it only to exchange it for the Nexus 10 which is what I really wanted (that is another story, maybe I will write about that another time).

I figured, what better way to see if it is truly a home computing replacement than by blogging from it.

This entire post is being written from the WordPress app.

First rode block, I needed to enable that from a desktop… OK, so not a good start but from here on out, its all tablet!

See image:

Or don’t… Because I double checked and its not loading properly. Something is funky with the image uploader.

OK, really bad start.

My goal was to ensure I could get the same functionality and the WordPress app is failing me miserably.

strongHow about links?/strong
The following links are all randomly generated from a href=”http://www.theuselessweb.com”the useless web/a
Let’s see. How about a a href=”http://www.omfgdogs.com”super psychedelic dog site/a? Or how about a href=”http://grandpanoclothes.com”a cartoon grandpa without clothes/a (its censored don’t worry).

Good these work.

strongHow about .gifs?/strong
Will this star wars .gif work?

img android-uri=”content://media/external/images/media/4055″ /

Seems like not.

strongHow about videos from YouTube?/strong
Nope. I have no place to embed them.

strongFormatting and SEO tags?/strong
Not a chance. No place for headers, title tags, descriptions or even alt attributes.

Well crap. This is turning into an utter disaster. No images, no .gifs. Formatting is a wreck, which means no headers, no bullets, and I keep hitting that damn button which opens all the apps I have running taking me away from the post.

strongAll in All/strong
FAIL. Completely failed. This is the dumbest app of all time.

Unless I missed something, if tablets can’t even do the basics like enabling us to blog using the ridiculous memes we find on the web, I would say we have a ways to go before we give up computers. I know I will not be writing blog posts from my tablet again anytime soon.

Effing disaster!

It’s just as bad trying to blog from my Samsung Infuse through Blogger. It involves a lot of switching back and forth between Gmail and Blogger and desktop and phone. I haven’t even attempted to use WP in a mobile setting; I just assume it will be horrendous.

I’m often inspired to write about something when I’m away from a desktop, so I’ve gotten used to simply creating notes on the phone and waiting til I’m back at “real” computer.

    Also, I hate mobile keyboards.

I’ll just dream of the day when I can project an infrared keyboard from my chest and have the content sync with my iGlasses through the cloud.

Thats a good idea too, to keep notes. And actually, I keep them in my little red notebook that I always walk around with (still old school).

The purpose of this would be to work on posts and other things and not have to shlep around my computer.

This is one of the (many) things I use Evernote for. It syncs across my devices and my desktop app.

Until a couple of years ago I took a notebook everywhere and I always keep a pen in my purse. Notebooks can’t take photos though.

Use Evernote. It’s my #1 productivity tool. Without it I’d still be carrying around a notebook but not be able to effectively search.

I’ve blogged once or twice from my iPad and I’ve edited WordPress posts from my iPhone (fact corrections, mostly) but much prefer using my desktop.

    This was awesome.

      Thanks John :)

Really ticked off too that it went down like this… Thought tablets were going to fix things. Oh well. Waiting till the next big thing.

Hey, I’ve seen this issue before. Some hosts with an old configuration can strip the brackets out. Try this plugin:

      Hey Dan,
So I took a look at this plugin and I honestly have no idea what is supposed to happen :)
Any insights here woudl be VERY valuable.

But I want to make sure we are talking about the same issue. I used the wordpress app on my tablet. I am sure if I had done it by goign to my sites wp-admin this would have been a different story. I did it for science.

All that being said, if you have a way to solve this problem, I am all ears brother.
      Cheers!

When the plugin is installed and activated it should fix the problem where the HTML brackets get stripped when uploaded from the app. Unfortunately it will only fix future posts that you make with the app and not this one, you’d have to edit the post and manually fix the tags so they have the opening and closing brackets.

Well, before I read this I wanted to get a tablet with a keyboard for WordPress.
Now I’m just cracking up at this epic fail.
They must have improved it by now?

I hope so :) I will ask on Twitter and see if anyone knows.
